Here’s an excerpt of this great little book from Cecilia, written with the help of the pets:

Chapter 1: Finding the Pet-Sitter

It’s time to go out of town! That means it’s also time for you to find a pet-sitter. So, where to begin? The yellow pages are a start, so is the internet; however, these options can be cold, and impersonal. A warmer approach is to turn to people you know and trust. These people could include your personal veterinarian, or employees at the vet’s office, such as the vet tech, or receptionist.

In many cases, employees of veterinarians’ offices will do pet-sitting “on the side”. This option may yield trustworthy candidates, though it may also yield inadequate, unsatisfactory ones as well. For the most reliable leads, ask around with your family, friends, or neighbors who have pets. Find out what they do when they travel.

Be cautious regarding leads from animal shelters and pet stores. References made by animal shelters run the risk of not being thoroughly checked out. Also, community bulletin boards at pet stores tend not to be moderated, meaning anybody, qualified or not, can post a business card. Just because their business card hangs in your vet’s office, does not mean that they are endorsed by your veterinarian.

If going to your local animal shelter, or pet store feels more comfortable for you; talk to the owner for a personal referral.

The bottom line: No source is inherently bad. Some sources carry more risk than others, but with a reliable, personal recommendation, and proper research, you can worry less about your pet’s safety, and enjoy your trip more.

So now that you know how to find a quality pet-sitter, let’s get down to the kibbles and bits of selection!
